I worked my first political campaign in 1980 when President Jimmy Carter ran against Ronald Reagan. I remember helping my school friend and neighbor, Ted Riley, son of soon to be South Carolina Governor, Dick Riley (Later Education Secretary under President Clinton). We rode around in a green van and handed out campaign signs and stuff. Carter’s defeat and the subsequent 12 years of Republican rule was a difficult political time for a young liberal-minded gay boy in Greenville South Carolina, and later Houston Texas. President Bill Clinton’s sweep into victory in 1992 and the next 7 years were in stark contrast to that. But then came another Bush and 8 more years of hardship, in my opinion, for anyone not White, straight and male.
Welcome to what The Huffington Post is calling “The Obama Era.” I LOVE it. I love that he was reelected instead of that entitled, smug, spoiled elitist, Mitt Romney and his look-a-like disgusting puppet puppy, Paul Ryan. That Gay Marriage passed in all four states it was on the ballot for, that Latinos turned out in record numbers as did the young and first time voters. And the Senate wins for women and the so-called gender gap were the largest margains ever. BAM! and FUCK YOU OLD RICH WHITE GUYS. This Hope Addict (see previous post) feels like THIS time, our country has really turned a corner and there is no going back now. “Freedom, Liberty and Justice for ALL” is now more than a concept. It’s a Clarion Call for everyone with ears and a heart to hear and feel and practice.
Thank you God, thank you for leading us out of the darkness once again into the light and onward, forward to the promised land. Yes, Hope and Change is alive and well in 2012 America. My America and your America, too.
